DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT

Amsale wedding dress

Many people consider designer Amsale Aberra to be the inventor of the modern wedding dress. When she was planning her wedding in 1985, she couldn’t find a gown that reflected her simple, elegant style (it was the 80s, after all). She decided to design and craft her own gown, and she has been designing for bridal clients ever since. Amsale’s gowns stay true to the company’s roots: they are modern, elegant, and chic.

Amsale – an Ethiopian refugee – was the first Black woman ever admitted to the Council of Fashion Designers of America. In recent years, she created Amsale Aspire, an initiative devoted to eliminating systemic racism in the fashion industry by supporting Black fashion students.
